Commercial Energy Manager Overview Transcription

This is a transcription of the “Commercial Energy Manager Overview” video by Chris Boggiano. 

Hi, my name is Chris Boggiano, and I am one of the instructors with Everblue Training Institute. In this short presentation, I’m going to introduce you to Everblue’s Commercial Energy Manager training. 

Our Commercial Energy Manager training is offered online and live, led by a live instructor. In our online format, it is a blended course with live webinars where students can interact with their instructors, segmented, broken up by online, pre-recorded sessions of the class that students can complete at their own pace. This offers the opportunity for students to get the best of both worlds, where they can both interact with the students and their instructor in an online classroom, and they also have the convenience of completing the course at their own pace and at their own schedule. We also offer this class in a live format, in a live, five-day, 40-hour format in various locations around the country, for both private, in-house groups and at select open enrollment locations throughout the United States. 

For the course, we have a number of different topics that we cover. First and foremost is the fundamentals of building science – what makes buildings energy efficient, how does heat move into and out of buildings. We also cover energy auditing – how to identify weak spots in different types of commercial buildings, and there’s a variety of different commercial building styles and stocks out there, so we cover the major weaknesses that you might see in all of those different types of buildings. We also talk about benchmarking, which is being able to identify how energy efficient a building is, a certain style or type of building relevant to other buildings that are similar in nature. We’ll talk about energy modeling, which gives us the opportunity to simulate the energy performance of a building and allows us to most efficiently invest money to get the most bang for your buck for upgrades when a building owner is deciding where they should invest their money to make improvements to their building. And then the last thing we’ll talk about is retro-commissioning, which is the opportunity to go and actually verify the performance of systems in a building, performance such as the HVAC systems in a building, the renewable energy systems that a building might have, domestic hot water systems in a building, and then the last thing would be the lighting systems in a building. All these things are covered in our course, and in addition to that, we cover other tools available from the Department of Energy and other resources that should be available to someone assessing the energy consumption of a commercial building. 

In the course, we have a number of student materials that are available to everyone in the class. First is the online reference materials that are accessible to all students, regardless of whether they take a live class or an online class. Every student has an online account, where they can go into that account, and they can access a number of helpful documents that they can use in the class and after the class to help them get a better understanding of the material that’s covered in the class, if they want to do any more in-depth research. 

We also have knowledge review questions, along with some video explanations. It gives students the opportunity to test their knowledge, and then after the questions are complete, a short video pops up explaining why the answer is right or wrong. If it’s a math question, there’s also the opportunity for someone to see how the math question is solved again in a video format, which helps them really understand the material.

And then the last thing – there’s on-demand lectures, just like this one, covering different content in the course and different course modules. 

One of the best features of our online learning interface is our online blackboard, which allows us to write out math problems and write out equations and the different items the instructor might need to cover in the class. If they wanted to draw a picture of something, if they wanted to draw a graph, if they wanted to write out some words or draw a sketch to explain a concept, all of this is possible. Literally anything that someone could write on a blackboard or on a piece of paper, they can write on this interface. Very, very powerful tool for communicating information online.
