Step 1: BPI Building Analyst Training

BPI Building Analyst Training is the basic BPI Certification. The Building Analyst course teaches you the knowledge necessary to provide homeowners an overview of energy consumption and options to save money by conserving energy. It is aligned with BPI Building Analyst Professional standards for energy auditing and provides instruction for energy efficiency analysis using the house-as-a-system approach.     What is the difference between getting certified for HERS and BPI?

Jason, HERs is primarily on New Construction

    Jason, HERS is primarily focused on new construction while BPI is primarily focused on existing home retrofits. Both standards teach the same basic building science principles but there are some differences. RESNET covers energy modeling, while BPI does not. BPI covers combustion safety, while RESNET does not. Right now BPI is the leading standard because not many new construction homes are being built and programs such as Home Star are focused on retrofitting existing homes.

    We are looking into getting one of our corporate staff BPI Certified, then becoming a BPI Accredited. I have a couple questions. 1-what is the total expected cost to accomplish this goal?

    To become BPI Accredited you must complete two or more BPI certifications. Once you have earned two or more certifications you can then apply to BPI for Accreditation.

    We offer a combined BPI Building Analyst and BPI Envelope Shell Professional course that will allow you the chance to earn two BPI certifications. Total cost for this combined class starts at $2245.

    Hello and great question about BPI Accreditation. The Building Performance Institute (BPI) defines accreditation as follows:

    "BPI Accreditation provides a business engaged in building performance contracting with a competitive advantage by ensuring that it has appropriately certified staffing and quality management systems in place that can result in the delivery of consistent, high quality building performance services on every project."

    Essentially, BPI Accreditation is for contractors to show that they have training and quality control processes in place to properly energy retrofit a home. To qualify for BPI Accreditation, your company must have staff with two or more BPI Professional Certifications.

    Depending on the state and county where you live there is funding available for BPI training and certification. Much of the funding is dedicated to people looking for work but some of it is for existing companies to make them greener and more competitive.     What if one doesn't pass the written exam or practical portion of certification process? Can one take the course again for free? Same location or else where?

    Hello Curt and thank you for your question.

    Should you not pass either your written or field exams, you can retake the exam the next time the course is available in a location convenient for you. You will need to pay to take just the individual exam. The written exam is $250 and the field exam is $350. Students coming in for a re-test will be able to also have the opportunity to review the course material with the instructor.
