This RESNET HERS Rater course includes everything required to become a certified HERS Rater - classroom training, field inspections, and the HERS Rater Exam.
Everblue's HERS Rater training will teach you the knowledge necessary to provide homeowners and home builders a detailed analysis of energy consumption and money-saving energy conservation strategies. In this course, you will learn how to help builders and architects improve home energy efficiency using the house-as-a-system approach. We will teach you the basics of building science, energy modeling, and how to conduct a rating on a home. There are no prerequisites for this RESNET Certified HERS Rater course.

This course is conducted in accordance with the RESNET standards and addresses the following topics:
In addition to classroom training, each student will have the opportunity to complete two energy models during this course. On their first model, you will use a set of building drawings to predict energy performance of a home that is not yet built. On your second model, you will apply test data gained during field training to build a model of an existing home. Both models can be used to identify the most cost-effective energy improvement options available to a homeowner or home builder.
The RESNET HERS Rater Test is an online, 50-question, true or false, multiple-choice exam covering building science concepts and rating procedures. Prospective raters have two hours to complete this open book test and must answer 80% or more of the questions correctly in order to pass. Raters receive their results immediately after completing the test. Successful examinees will be listed in the directory of certified raters posted on RESNET's website.
The RESNET National Rater Test's questions are divided into the key categories of building science and home energy ratings. For a full breakdown of the categories, click here.

"I just completed Resnet training in Phoenix and was thrilled with the training. Phil Haglof taught the course with an immense amount of confidence and knowledge that was evident from day one. I was excited with what Phil brought to the training and was able to learn the material because of how he taught. Everblue is better and Resnet's raters are better because of the training and the knowledge that Phil provides. I want to thank Everblue for your professionalism and appreciate the quality of education that you provide your students.

HERS vs. BPI
Good day! I want to become a certified home energy auditor, in what order would you recommend training and testing for BPI Building Analyst or HERS Energy Rater?
Also, if time or $ restriction, which one would be best (and take the other later)?
Thanks.
HERS Rater vs BPI Building Analyst
Bob,
If you are just starting out and want to become a certified home energy auditor, I would recommend BPI Building Analyst first. BPI Building Analyst will teach you how to audit existing homes and is the nationally recognized energy auditor certification.
However, over time you should obtain both certifications. While BPI focuses on existing home energy use and indoor air quality, RESNET focuses on new home construction, HVAC/duct efficiency, and qualifies homes for the energy star program.

Field Testing
A close relative of mine is very interested in the BPI training. In fact, he hasn't even registered yet and is already studying for the class and exam. However, because of a few current physical limitations, he is concerned about passing the field testing. If he is unable to pass the field testing part of the class, will he be able to take that test again to get certified when his current situation improves? And if so, will there be an additional cost?
Thank you for your quick response.

BPI Field Testing
Ann,
Hello. We will work with your friend to ensure that he has the opportunity to take and pass the exam, especially if it is a disability or an illness. In the rare case that someone fails (we have over a 96% pass rate), then we will work with them to retest as quickly as possible.
Thank you,
Everblue
Military/Govt
Are the the certifications from BPI and/or RESNET approved and accepted by the US govt and military installations?
Energy Specialist to RESNET HERS Rater
I was an Energy Specialist In CA for some time and worked for a local contractor. Would the training and understanding I have help me to become a HERS rater or do I need to take the BPI building analyst course first?
Energy Specialist to RESNET HERS Rater
Having experience as an Energy Specialist will certainly help you as you move forward towards becoming a RESNET HERS Rater
OR a BPI Building Analyst.
The biggest different between these 2 credentials is with RESNET, you focus on the energy efficient construction of new homes. As a BPI Building Analyst, you learn how to retrofit existing homes to be more sustainable.
Neither of these Everblue courses are prerequisites to the other. Therefore, the accreditation you choose to pursue depends on the type of work you want to do in the future.
Thank you!

Resnet Hers rating
What is the difference in RESNET and HERS Ratings, and what are the acronyms for each?
Resnet Hers rating
Hi Steven,
RESNET stands for Residential Services Network and is the standard bearer for the Home Energy Rating System (HERS). A HERS rating is developed using RESNET standards. You can find more information about HERS and RESNET at www.resnet.us.
Thank you,
Everblue
HERS certification
I've taken the BPI Bulding Analyst and Envelope tests, do I have to take another test to be HERS certified or does that come along with passing those tests?
HERS Certification
Hello Joel,
Thank you for your interest. You will have to take a HERS exam as the HERS certification is different from BPI certification and its exam is considerably different to the BPI exams you took. You can however miss the first day of our five-day RESNET training course and receive a discount for the training. Please call us at 800 460 2575 to receive the discount.
Thank you,
Bana
BPI Building Analyst wants to add RESNET
I have completed several BPI Certifications. I want to add RESNET. I do not need to repeat Blower Door, Duct Blaster nor CO or CAZ. All I need is the RESNET Standards, Operations and core.
Is there is customized course to accomodate the Certified Professional?
LKJ

HERS Rater to BPI & vs. LEED
I am a HER Rater interested in adding BPI what is required. And also wanting to know the advantages/disadvantages of HERS vs. LEED for Homes.
HERS Rater to BPI & vs. LEED
Hello Sheila,
If you would like to add BPI to your credentials, you can attend our BPI course a skip the first day if you wish. We also offer a discount as you are a HERS Rater and do not need to attend the first day of our five-day training course. To find out more, call us at 800 460 2575.
The advantage of having your HERS credential is that currently it is more widely-known and implemented. It also teaches you hands-on tools to perform an energy audit as appose to LEED for Homes which has an exam that is purely knowledge based. For this reason Everblue currently does not offer LEED for Homes as its demand is not as high and other LEED specialties such as LEED AP: Building Design and Construction.
Over Time...
However, over time you should obtain both certifications. While BPI focuses on existing home energy use and indoor air quality, RESNET focuses on new home construction, HVAC/duct efficiency, and qualifies homes for the energy star program.
things to buy for a new home

Which Certification: BPI or HERS?
For a certified home energy auditor which one of the certifications is better to do first , BPI or HERS. Clarity of this will be much appreciated.
Which Certification: BPI or HERS?
Hello Charles, thank you for your question.
While both certifications are appropriate for someone who wishes to perform home energy audits, a BPI certification is focued on homes that are already built and wish to be renovated to become more energy effcient. HERS certification is designed for new homes, sometimes still under construction. I hope this information helps you distinguish which certification you would prefer! If not, please call us at 800 460 2575 for more information.
Thank you, Bana
HERS Rater Salary
I am working with the schools in career education. I have a profile established for a HERS Rater but I am having a difficult time finding a reputable source for salary information. Can you provide a source for salary info or a beginning salary. The Occupation Outlook handbook and salary.com is my usual source but this occupation is not listed in either. Thanks!
HERS Rater Salary
Hello Steve and thank you for your question.
Typically a HERS rater will charge between $100-$300 a rating. Prices vary on the size of the building and location, so it may help to locate a local HERS rater to find an accurate salary.
Thank you,
Bana
California home owner
I am in California and wish to qualify for an Energy Efficient Mortgage when purchasing an "Existing Home." Will a BPI energy audit, using Energy Pro for the report, qualify for the FHA lender? Or does one have to be a HERS Rater (whole house rater)?
Thanks, John
California home owner
John, thank you for the question. A BPI audit should indeed qualify, but each lender has their own terms so you should check with a few local lenders just to be sure.
Thank you
