This is page 2 of 4 in the LEED Credential Maintenance series.
The LEED AP credential is recognized as a sign of achievement for having passed the rigorous LEED exam and an acknowledgement of commitment to leadership in the emerging green industry. LEED v3’s arrival in April 2009 brought a number of changes and enhancements along with it, including a new tiered credentialing system known as the Credentialing Maintenance Program (CMP), which requires LEED professionals to complete ongoing continuing education.
The CMP's goals are to broaden the perspective of LEED professionals, keeping their knowledge current and their LEED accreditation relevant. Under the new system, LEED professionals at all levels (including LEED Green Associates, LEED APs for Operations and Maintenance, Homes, Building Design & Construction, Interior Design and Construction, and Neighborhood Development) are accredited for two-year periods. During that time, a LEED Green Associate or LEED AP must accumulate a set number of continuing education hours and report them to GBCI while doing so. The fee for renewing the title every two years is $50.00.
If a LEED professional fails to complete the required hours, their LEED credential will expire at the end of the two-year period. In order to regain their credential, individuals must then retest to regain their credential.
LEED APs are required to complete 30 hours of continuing education every two years. Six of these hours must be LEED-specific and related to the specialty credential the individual holds. LEED Green Associates are only required to earn 15 CE hours in a two-year span. Three of these hours must be LEED-specific and may pertain to any of the rating systems available.
Legacy LEED APs are accredited professionals that passed their LEED exam prior to June 30, 2009. The GBCI invited those professionals to upgrade their accreditation by declaring their specialty with the GBCI and then completing a prescriptive CMP program that included 30 hours of continuing education prior to the fall of 2011 (every legacy LEED AP had been assigned a deadline by GBCI). Currently, Legacies will not have to pay a biannual renewal fee and will not have to take LEED CMP hours, but they will no longer be able to count their LEED status as a point while working on a LEED project. If you are a Legacy LEED AP interested in finding out what your options are to upgrade past the deadline, please contact GBCI directly.
Legacy LEED APs that have declared their speciality with the GBCI, but still need to complete an approved prescriptive CMP program, can still register for Everblue's LEED CMP 1.0.
Overall, GBCI's introduction of an education requirement ensures that each LEED professional's base of knowledge remains up-to-date in a rapidly changing field. The LEED credential has become the standard by which green expertise in the building and design fields are measured, and requiring continuing education ensures that the LEED AP credential remains relevant and meaningful in the future.

LEED AP Credit Maintence Program
Where can i see a description of the courses for the LEED CMP? Also, what is the difference between the CMP and the CMP 2.0? I am a Legacy LEED AP. Thanks, Susan
LEED AP Credit Maintence Program
Hello and thank you for your question.
You can find a course description on the LEED CMP page. If this is your first round of CMP, you will want to take the LEED CMP for 30 hours. The LEED CMP 2.0 is for those who have already completed thier first 30 hours of CEU and now need an additional 30 hours.
Thank you,
Bana

In fact I tried to create a new account, but there are no possibilities to insert Countries outside USA. Thank you for your kind attention! Veronica
Italian LEED AP
Hello Veronica,
The LEED CMP can be used by anyone, anywhere in the world. In fact, a large amount of Everblue's online students are from countries outside of the US. You should be able to insert an Italian address on the Everblue payment page, however we understand sometimes there can be issues. We will put you in touch with a representative to assist you with this.
Thank you,
Bana
