The USGBC and the GBCI

This is Page 3 of 8 in the Getting Started with LEED series.

Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, or USGBC, LEED provides a yardstick for measuring building sustainability.  Founded in 1993, the USGBC now has over 20,000 member organizations, 120,000 LEED Accredited Professionals, and has been used to build more than 3.6 billion square feet of space sustainably.  While the USGBC focuses on developing and refining the LEED standards, its sister organization, the Green Building Certification Institute, or GBCI, actually runs the LEED Building Certification and LEED Professional Accreditation programs.

The building was using Expanded Poly Styrene sheets 6 inches thick between concrete centers. Otherwise I am not currently in the construction business. I am interested in LEED, does it apply to me?

LEED for Product Manufacturers

    Jeffrey,

You do not have to be actively involved in construction to learn about LEED. In fact, more than half our students are not architects, engineers, or contractors. We train product manufacturers, government officials, retirees, distributors, entrepreneurs, and more. LEED is the best available summary of sustainability and learning about LEED can teach you new ways to innovate and sell your product.

If you are interested in LEED and Sustainability, come to one of our classes to learn more.

I'm a construction superintendent with about 15 years of onsite supervision experience. How would obtaining a Leed AP credential benefit me?

    Thanks,

LEED AP for Construction Superintendents

  • Submitted by Everblue on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 05:34.
    Glen,

Hello. The number of LEED projects have expanded rapidly over the past four years despite the overall decrease in construction spending. In fact, the Federal government now mandates LEED Gold requirements on its construction projects, nearly all high level education institutions are building LEED projects, and many Fortune 500 companies are adopting LEED for all of their sites (Starbucks, Lowes, PNC Bank, etc). Additionally, many private developers are following the LEED Green Building practices even if they are not pursuing outright certification.

For you, earning LEED AP is way to demonstrate that you understand LEED and Green Building requirements and will make you more employable in the future.
